Become a Mental Health First Aider (MHFAider®)

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training gives people the knowledge and skills to spot signs of poor mental health and offer first aid support.

By improving mental health skills, confidence and access to support, the training assists in reducing stigma, increasing wellbeing, and encouraging people to thrive both in their communities, families and in work.

 

We know the last few years have been hard on everyone - organisations, employees, and the people supporting them.

 

Amidst a global pandemic, economic uncertainty and changes to the ways we work, the need to support the mental health and wellbeing of our people is greater than ever.

 

With Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) England training you will be accessing the very best evidence-based Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course available.

 

MHFA training is grounded in research, developed with clinical practitioners and proven to increase MHFAiders® confidence in supporting people with mental health issues.

 

With the new offer, MHFA training doesn’t stop when the course comes to an end, MHFAiders® receive continuous support well beyond their initial certification so they are confident, empowered and motivated to carry out their role.

2022 Impact Report

We are delighted to share MHFA England's Impact Report as they celebrate their 15th anniversary. This report shares 15 years of their history, their achievements over the years 2020 – 2022, and their plans for the future. It’s a celebration of our whole community’s hard work and passion for improving the nation’s mental health and Blooming Mind are so proud to be instructor members. See report below.

Course Content

Session One:

  • Mental Health First Aid ​and the action plan 

  • The MHFAider® role ​and self-care 

  • Helpful and unhelpful language ​ 

  • Useful models to support the role 

Session Two:

  • What influences mental health? ​ 

  • What is anxiety? ​ 

  • Crisis first aid 

  • Active listening and empathy ​ 

  • What are eating disorders? ​ 

  • What is self-harm? ​ 

  • What is substance misuse? ​ 

Session Three:

  • Applying the Mental Health First Aid action plan 

  • What is depression? ​ 

  • What is suicide? ​ 

  • Crisis first aid ​continued 

  • What is psychosis? ​ 

Session Four:

  • Recovery and lived experience ​ 

  • Boundaries in the MHFAider® role 

  • Moving forward in the MHFAider® role including Support App ​ 

  • My MHFA action plan ​ 

Format

  • Online or face-to-face course structured across four flexible sessions. Each session is a maximum of 3hrs 45mins and sessions can be delivered within a two week period.  

  • Learners will be trained over four live sessions with an MHFA England Instructor Member, covering 14 hours of content in total.​ 

  • Learning takes place through a mix of instructor led training, group discussions, individual and group activities. 

  • Each session builds on the previous, enabling the learner to gain confidence in supporting others with a Mental Health First Aid action plan. 

  • We limit numbers to 16 people per course so that instructors can keep people safe and supported while they learn. 

  • We strive for all of our learning content to be as accessible and inclusive as possible. 

Takeaways

Everyone who completes the course gets:

  • A certificate of attendance to say you are a Mental Health First Aider

  • A manual to refer to whenever you need it

  • A quick reference card and lanyard for the Mental Health First Aid action plan

  • A workbook including a helpful toolkit to support your own mental health

Cost

MHFA England value this course at £325 per person. 

We are able to offer the full course and support package for a subsidised cost of £250 per person.
In-house courses are priced at £3500 for a maximum of 16 participants.
